Chapter Seven

Sunlight filtered in through the display windows at Crumbs and inched along the lobby floor as time passed. Behind the service counter, Claire refilled the display cases with fresh cookies and smiled. The feeling of satisfaction she derived from her new, sugary path in life never got old.

With the cases stocked, she turned over the sign and opened the shop, ready to share her cookies with the town once more. It didn’t take long before the door opened and her first customers of the day strolled in off the busy Main Street.

As the hours ticked by, Claire busied herself with greeting customers and offering the best service she could. After awhile, the cookies in the display cases started to dwindle so she replenished them with the ones she had stored in the racks behind the counter. Without more backups, though, she soon ran out of her most popular offerings.

Claire placed small signs that read SOLD OUT in the empty display cases and sighed.

“I wonder if I should hire someone to look after the front while I make cookies in the back.” She glanced at the front window and imagined a hiring sign hanging on it, facing out towards the street.

In a busy place like Sandal Springs, she was sure to garner some interest if she wanted to fill a position. But first, she’d need to acquire a Help Wanted sign.

While she considered her options, she kept her hands busy by tidying up the place and preparing more boxes. Eventually, her mind wandered back to the case and all of the information she’d gathered after questioning Tina and George.

According to Tina, she had an alibi for the time of the murder and insisted George wasn’t the culprit, either. Meanwhile, George had pointed fingers at Roman Abelard and reassured her that he had nothing to do with Ron’s death.

I still need to speak with Roman again. Claire hoped an opportunity would present itself soon.

Puzzle pieces of the mystery surrounding Ron’s death were missing and Claire has a feeling the attorney was hiding important information.

She was dying to figure out what it was. The problem was getting him to talk.

I wonder what dad would think about this case? He always knew what to do. Claire peeked at the cookies, deliberating.

“I should go see him after work and bring his favorites.” She grabbed an empty box on impulse and filled it up with all of her father’s favorite kinds of cookies, then stored the container in the kitchen.

The end of her shift couldn’t come soon enough.
